Russia on Tuesday rejected allegations by US President Donald Trump that it has conducted secret underground nuclear tests, saying it is willing to discuss the matter.
In October, Trump sparked global concerns when he hinted that the United States may resume underground nuclear weapons tests, something not done since 1992, stating, “We’re going to do some testing … You’ll find out very soon."
He had also levelled the accusations that both Russia and China had secretly tested nuclear weapons.
Previously, Trump posted on his social-media platform that he had ordered the US military to “start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis," citing growing threats from China and Russia.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov offered on Tuesday to speak to Washington about its concerns.
“We are ready to discuss the suspicions raised by our American colleagues regarding the possibility that we might be secretly doing something deep underground," he told state media in a televised interview.
Lavrov further suggested that the US could check whether Russia had tested a nuclear warhead via the global seismic monitoring system.
“Other tests, both subcritical, or those without a chain nuclear reaction, and carrier tests, have never been prohibited," he added.
On clarifications from the US to the specifics of its allegations, AFP quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying: “So far, no explanations have been provided by our American counterparts."
Russia and the US hold a combined 8,000 deployed and stored warheads, AFP cited the Stockholm Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
