Three people were killed in overnight Russian attacks across Ukraine on Wednesday, including one person in Kyiv, where powerful explosions were heard for the second night in a row. In Russia, officials said Ukrainian drone attacks killed one person, injured several others and damaged industrial facilities and two oil tankers.
Ukraine's Air Force said Russia fired 169 long-range strike drones and seven missiles, including five ballistic missiles, during the night. It said air defences shot down or jammed 139 drones, while two anti-radar missiles did not reach their targets. The Air Force said all five ballistic missiles and 20 drones struck targets at 15 locations, underlining the continued pressure on Ukraine's air defences.
In Kyiv, several explosions were heard shortly after midnight, before authorities issued an air raid alert. The sequence was unusual as warnings usually come before strikes, giving civilians time to move to shelter. According to city administration head Tymur Tkachenko, one woman was killed and two other people were injured in the capital. Ukraine's State Emergency Service said the attack damaged several administrative buildings and warehouses, as well as a garage complex and several city trams.
In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said two people were killed and 20 others were injured in a series of overnight strikes. In Zaporizhzhia, regional head Ivan Fedorov said a Russian guided bomb injured an elderly man and a woman during the night.
Russia's Defence Ministry said its military had carried out a strike on arms industry facilities in Kyiv overnight. It said the attack hit a plant manufacturing components for Flamingo cruise missiles and a site assembling mid- and long-range drones.
The ministry also said Russian air defences downed 415 Ukrainian drones from late Tuesday to early Wednesday. Saratov Governor Roman Busargin said a Ukrainian drone attack killed one person, injured several others and damaged unspecified industrial facilities. Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyayev said Ukrainian drones damaged industrial facilities in the city and injured several people, without naming the sites.
Yuri Slyusar, the governor of the Rostov region, said Ukrainian drones hit and damaged two oil tankers in Taganrog Bay, injuring two crew members. He said the crew of one vessel had to be evacuated. Slyusar added that there was no oil spill as the tankers, which were heading to the port of Rostov-on-Don, were empty.
The overnight attacks left casualties and damage on both sides, with Ukraine reporting three deaths from Russian strikes and Russia reporting one death and damage from Ukrainian drone attacks.
