In an uncharacteristic emotional outburst, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has accused his uncle Sharad Pawar of splitting the family and making the “same mistake” as him by fielding a family member against him in Baramati for the assembly elections.
The Pawar family has been in the limelight ever since a disgruntled Ajit Pawar split the NCP to join the ruling Mahayuti in July last year. And then, during the Lok Sabha elections, he followed it up by fielding his wife, Sunetra Pawar, against cousin Supriya Sule from the Baramati parliamentary constituency.
This time, in the assembly polls, he is up against his nephew Yugendra Pawar in the Baramati assembly seat. This, he said, was “low-level politics” on the part of “Bade Saheb”, as Sharad Pawar is known.
Once again this seat will be the most discussed with another electoral contest between two Pawar family members. The deputy chief minister, who is contesting the election for the seventh time, said: “I will win in Baramati with a good number of votes. Everyone has the right to contest elections. I made a mistake by fielding my wife Sunetra Pawar in the Lok Sabha. Now, Sharad Pawar (group) has made the same mistake by fielding Yugendra.”
He said it was his mistake to field his wife against Sule in the Lok Sabha polls. “It was our mistake. This time he (Sharad Pawar) has made this mistake… Now, the people of Baramati will decide. Yugendra Pawar has been made the candidate. That is their right, but he (Sharad Pawar) should not have done this,” he said.
Yugendra is the son of Ajit Pawar’s younger brother Shrinivas Pawar. “My mother even advised that they (Sharad Pawar faction) should not nominate anyone against Ajit Pawar. But, I was told that Saheb (Sharad Pawar) instructed someone to file a nomination against me… he created a split in the family…politics should not be brought to such a low level because it takes generations to be united but it doesn’t take a single moment to break the family,” he added.
Ajit filed his nomination from the Baramati seat on Monday for the November 20 assembly elections. He reached the tehsil office in Pune district to file the nomination while being accompanied by a large number of supporters who took out a rally as a mark of their show of strength. His two sons Parth Pawar and Jay Pawar, and other party leaders were present.
Yugendra also filed his nomination earlier in the day without much fanfare. He was accompanied by Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule, who is the Lok Sabha MP from Baramati.
