US President Donald Trump is planning to visit Saudi Arabia in May this year – which will be his first foreign trip in his second term at the White House, Axios reported, citing two officials.

This comes as the White House has singled out Saudi Arabia as a possible participant in the Abraham Accords – a series of agreements initiated in 2020 to normalise ties between Israel and several Arab and Muslim-majority countries.

Saudi Arabia has been taking a prominent role in the US’s attempts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine as it hosted a dialogue between the US and Russia and then the US and Ukraine.

Will Saudi Arabia Join Abraham Accords?

According to the report, plans to normalise Israel-Saudi relations are currently “on the back burner" due to Riyadh’s condition that the plan must include Palestinian statehood – which is a non-starter for Israel.

However, last week, Trump said more nations would join the Abraham Accords, which were negotiated during his first term. Israel, UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan were among the signatories of the Accord on September 15, 2020.

Earlier this month, Trump said that he would likely travel to Saudi Arabia as his first foreign trip in this administration to seal an agreement for Riyadh – an investment of $1 trillion in the US economy, which also includes procurement of military equipment.

He said on March 6 that he would likely visit within the next month and a half. He also recalled that his first overseas trip in 2017 was to Riyadh, where he announced Saudi investments estimated at $350 billion.

The report also said that the trip was discussed in recent weeks between senior US officials and their Saudi counterparts.

A source told Times of Israel that April 28 was discussed as a potential date for Trump’s visit, however, it was postponed. The current plan is for his travel to Saudi Arabia in mid-May, Axios reported.
