At least seven Pakistan Army soldiers were killed in an improvised explosive device blast (IED) in the restive Balochistan province on Tuesday, CNN-News18 has learned. The Pakistan Army, in a press release released later in the day, claimed that the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) was responsible for the attack.
“Terrorists belonging to the Baloch Liberation Army targeted a security forces’ vehicle with an improvised explosive device in the general area of Mach, Kachhi district," according to a Pakistan Army statement.
The bomb blast comes shortly after 30 to 40 gunmen blocked a major highway that cuts across Balochistan province last week. They intercepted a prison van being transported by a police team and took five police officers hostage.
Pakistan has long struggled with a separatist insurgency in Balochistan, where militant groups routinely attack security forces. They accuse them of helping the Pakistani state in sidelining the locals of the resource-rich province bordering Iran and Afghanistan.
The BLA is the most prominent and active outfit in the region.
The group has repeatedly targeted infrastructure and energy projects involving foreign investment, particularly those backed by China, like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
In one of its most high-profile attacks in March, BLA militants hijacked a passenger train, holding hundreds hostage and killing off-duty personnel during a siege that lasted three days.
