Snowfall and heavy rain have claimed at least 61 lives across Afghanistan over the past three days, the country’s disaster management authority said on Saturday.
The Afghanistan Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) said the fatalities were recorded between Wednesday and Friday, with most deaths reported from central and northern provinces. A map released by the agency detailed the affected regions.
In a post on X, ANDMA said preliminary assessments also showed at least 110 people injured and 458 houses either partially or completely destroyed.
A spokesperson said around 360 families have been impacted by the severe weather, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly on snow-covered roads.
Authorities have shut the Salang highway one of Afghanistan’s key transport routes according to officials in Parwan province.
Meanwhile, food supplies were distributed to travellers stranded on a mountain pass in the central province of Bamyan as rescue and relief operations continued.
