The Israeli forces released drone footage, claiming it shows Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s final moments. It appears to show Sinwar ‘sitting on a sofa, alone, wounded’ in a ruined Gaza apartment with the walls blown out from shelling.
With his right arm appearing to be severely injured, the video shows the Hamas leader flinging a stick over his head in the direction of the approaching drone.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz confirmed that Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who ordered the October 7 attack on Israel, was ‘eliminated’, according to initial DNA testing.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces have delivered “a blow to evil”. However, he stated that the mission against Hamas is far from over.
When the footage was taken, Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari said Sinwar was only identified as a fighter. The military then fired an additional shell at the building, causing it to collapse and kill him, Hagari said. He said Sinwar was found with a bulletproof vest, grenades, and 40,000 shekels ($10,707).
