Thousands of Gazans celebrated on Wednesday as news spread that a ceasefire and hostage release deal had been reached between Israel and Hamas, aimed at ending over 15 months of conflict in the Palestinian territory.
Several videos surfaced on social media showing people gathering in groups, hugging, and taking photos with their mobile phones to mark the announcement.
The deal, confirmed by a US official, was reached in the final days of President Joe Biden’s administration. The agreement, which includes a ceasefire and the release of hostages, was earlier announced by a source briefed on the talks in Qatar.
This deal comes after Biden had strongly pushed for an accord before Donald Trump’s return to the White House on January 20.
