Snap is going to offer its popular lenses and AR filters through the glasses that will be costlier than the Meta glasses but not Apple's headset.

Snap is bringing its own AR smart glasses in the next 12 months.

Snap is bringing its own AR smart glasses in the next 12 months.

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat is ready to enter the smart glasses arena with its first AR glasses coming in 2026. The company shared a teaser of the product at an event in California this week, as it looks to a world where smartphones might not be the go-to choice for users in the future.

The AI era is clearly giving smart glasses another lease of life, and even Google’s Sergey Brin has decided to take up work because of this exciting hype around the technology.

Snap is promising a sleek and lightweight wearable that will be powered by AR and have some level of AI intelligence which makes it useful. Meta has become the obvious case study for products in the segment with its Ray Ban smart glasses that double up as your AI assistant on the face, and offer features like camera, mic and even speakers to play music.

Snap will be calling its glasses Specs (and not Spectacles) and cheekily claims it will not be as expensive as the $3,499 (Rs 3 lakh approx) Vision Pro headset. And we sure hope the Specs AR glasses don’t go much beyond what you end up paying for the Meta glasses (around $300) these days in the market.

One thing is for certain, companies feel that smartphones will be eventually replaced by a more personal form factor. OpenAI claims to think that a screen-less device could be the answer, which it will be making with the help of former Apple chief designer Jony Ive in the next year or so.

Coming back to Specs, the company is not sharing the hardware details for the product but we do expect features similar to the Meta glasses combined with its speciality AR filters and lenses which gives it a definite selling point compared to its prospective rivals.

So basically, we could have Specs from Snap, Google’s AR glasses powered by AndroidXR and the new Meta glasses version competing in the segment in the next few years. This will be the next form of computers with a display that will interact with the users and give them AI in a new form factor.
