'So proud of you, Dad': Trudeau's daughter Ella-Grace offers emotional tribute to father's time as PM

Canada's Liberal Party bid farewell to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday night. Before Trudeau delivered his final speech as prime minister, his daughter, Ella-Grace gave an emotional tribute to her father.

Ella-Grace Trudeau took to the stage before Liberal Party members, recalling how her family's life had transformed since her father became the prime minister of Canada. Yet, as Justin Trudeau stepped down, a teary-eyed Ella-Grace made it clear that she wouldn't have traded the last few years for anything. She expressed immense pride in her father's role, not only as the Canadian Prime Minister but also for his dedication to upholding the country's values.

She said, “I would never trade the last few years for anything. Dad, I'm so proud of you. I'm so proud to have seen you fight for our country, for what you believe in, for what we in this room believe in.”

Trudeau will be succeeded by Mark Carney after winning 86% of the votes of Liberal Party members on Sunday.

Who is Ella-Grace Trudeau?

Ella-Grace is the only daughter of Justin Trudeau and his estranged wife Sophie Gregoire. She was born in 2009 and is the middle child, older than younger brother, Hadrien and younger than eldest Xavier.

On February 5th this year, Ella-Grace turned 16. Both her parents congratulated her via separate posts on social media. Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grgoire announced their separation in August 2023.

During the introduction speech, Ella-Grace admitted that it was not easy to be a child of a prime minister. She asked the audience to imagine seeing constant news and controversies about their father on social media.

“I think we all know that being the prime minister is not the easiest job in the world But it's not that easy being the kid of a prime minister either Imagine constantly seeing your dad or even news about him as you scroll through your feed,” she added.

Nevertheless, Ella-Grace expressed her happiness about spending more time with her father following his resignation. She humorously remarked that she and her two brothers were reclaiming Justin Trudeau from the Canadian public after his twelve years of service.

Ella-Grace continued, “My brothers and I have shared our dad with you for the past 12 years. Now we’re taking him back.”
