A rare revolt within the Republican Party unfolded in Washington on Wednesday as the US House of Representatives voted to push back against President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, triggering a warning from Trump.

According to the Associated Press, the House voted 219-211 to approve a resolution aimed at ending the national emergency Trump declared in order to impose tariffs on Canadian imports.

Six Republicans joined Democrats in backing the measure, marking one of the first significant instances of GOP lawmakers confronting the President over a signature policy of his second term.

The vote is largely symbolic. As reported by AFP, any effort to undo the tariffs would still require passage in the Senate and Trump’s signature.

Even if it were to clear both chambers, the President is widely expected to veto it, and Congress is unlikely to muster the two-thirds majority required to override such a veto.

In the hours before and after the vote, tensions were visible within Republican ranks.

House Speaker Mike Johnson attempted to block the measure, arguing that lawmakers should wait for a forthcoming Supreme Court ruling on the legality of the tariffs.

He also engineered a procedural move to prevent the vote, but that effort collapsed when several Republicans sided with Democrats.

However, events quickly suggested a more combative tone from the President himself.

Kevin Hassett, director of the White House’s Economic Council, told reporters at the White House on Wednesday morning, “We’re disappointed. The President will make sure they don’t repeal his tariffs."

TRUMP’S TRUTH SOCIAL WARNING

Within minutes of the vote concluding, Trump posted a pointed message on Truth Social, directly targeting members of his own party.

“Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!" he wrote.

He defended his trade policy in sweeping terms.

“Our Trade Deficit has been reduced by 78%, the Dow Jones has just hit 50,000, and the S&P, 7,000, all Numbers that were considered IMPOSSIBLE just one year ago," Trump said.

He further argued that tariffs had strengthened the country’s security position.

“TARIFFS have given us Great Security, because the mere mention of the word has Countries agreeing to our strongest wishes. TARIFFS have given us Economic and Security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege," he added.

Trump also turned his criticism towards Canada, writing, “Canada has taken advantage of the United States on Trade for many years. They are among the worst in the World to deal with, especially as it relates to our Northern Border. TARIFFS make a WIN for us, EASY. Republicans must keep it that way!"

The resolution seeks to terminate the national emergency that Trump declared last year to justify imposing the tariffs.

According to the Associated Press, the Senate has already passed a similar measure rejecting the Canada tariffs.

Nevertheless, the White House retains the decisive power in the process.
