Two people, including the suspected shooter, were killed in a shooting at the Citibank Center in Brandon, Florida, on Wednesday, after a security guard confronted the gunman inside the facility’s cafeteria, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Frank Losat said at a news conference.

The suspect allegedly fatally shot another person upon entering the facility before being confronted by the security guard. The guard was injured in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, Losat said.

At least four other people were treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not disclosed details about a possible motive behind the shooting.

“We are aware of an incident impacting our site in Tampa, Florida and are coordinating with law enforcement,” Citibank said in a statement to CNN.

Earlier, a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said authorities had responded to an “active threat”, adding that “there is no longer a threat to the public”.

The shooting triggered panic among employees at the facility, with people in the area receiving public safety alerts on their phones warning of an “active shooter” and urging them to shelter in place.

Doug Merritt said he was startled after his son called to inform him that he had fled the Citibank building after hearing gunshots.

“He was very close to it,” Merritt told The Associated Press. “He left all this stuff where he was at and he was able to get out of there.”

Merritt said a poor internet connection made it difficult to reach his son, leaving him uncertain for about an hour whether he was safe.

“I wanted him to get to safety,” he said. “I was upset.”

Video from CNN affiliate Spectrum Bay News 9 showed a large police presence at the scene following the shooting.

The Citibank campus comprises four three-story office buildings housing thousands of employees of the banking giant, according to The Associated Press.

Brandon is located about 13 miles east of downtown Tampa.
