Amid the ongoing tussle between the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre over the alleged “Hindi imposition," Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday hit out at the opposition, clarifying that the central government is not imposing any language on anyone nor taking away anyone’s rights.

During his response on the working of the Ministry of Education in the Rajya Sabha, Pradhan stressed that India is a multilingual country and asserted that the Narendra Modi-led government will not “hurt anyone’s feelings based on language".

The Education Minister further stated that “Tamil language is no one’s monopoly," adding, “What they did to Jayalalitha on the floor of the house, we don’t need anyone’s certificate on whether we are committed to Tamil language or not. We are fully committed to Tamil language."

The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the Centre are at loggerheads over the former’s stance on the three-language policy under the Education Policy (NEP).
