A Singaporean woman, Janney Hujic, shared a detailed post on LinkedIn recounting what she believed was a chance meeting with Piyush Gupta

What began as a heartfelt LinkedIn tribute to a former CEO turned into an unexpected case of mistaken identity — and has since gone viral.
A Singaporean woman, Janney Hujic, shared a detailed post on LinkedIn recounting what she believed was a chance meeting with Piyush Gupta, the Indian-origin former CEO of DBS Bank, while at a cafe in Bali, Indonesia.
The only problem? It wasn’t him.
In her post titled “A Chance Encounter with the Ex-CEO of DBS — In the Last Place I Expected“, Hujic described a warm and thoughtful exchange with a man she thought was Gupta. She praised his humility, his interest in her work empowering women through adventure retreats, and how he spoke with insight about the value of rest, nature, and leadership.
“What struck me wasn’t just the legendary career — transforming DBS into a global digital banking leader — but the humility and presence with which he carried himself. No entourage. No airs. Just quiet conviction. We spoke for a few minutes," she wrote.
She also shared a photo of herself with the man and even tagged Piyush Gupta directly in the post, adding to the impression that the meeting had indeed happened with the real person.
The post quickly gained attention on LinkedIn and beyond. Eventually, it reached the real Piyush Gupta, who responded with just one line in the comments: “Sorry to disillusion you. That isn’t me!"
Hujic took the correction with good humour, replying: “Oh gosh, I’ve seen you when I was at DBS couldn’t tell the 2 apart. Kudos to him. In his defense he had your charms right on and he said all the right things."
According to her LinkedIn profile, Janney Hujic is the founder of Elysian Partners & Expeditions, an all-women’s adventure and retreat company. She previously worked at DBS Bank in Singapore, which may explain her familiarity with Gupta’s face.
Piyush Gupta, an Indian-origin banker, served as CEO of DBS Bank, one of Asia’s leading financial institutions, before stepping down in March after 15 years.
