Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City’s first Muslim mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, called out a fake Instagram account impersonating her and amassing more than 14,000 followers. Rama Duwaji, who commands a substantial online presence with 8.96 lakh followers on her official Instagram handle, shared a screenshot of the fraudulent profile on her Instagram Story with a message, “This is not me."

The incident comes at a time when the Mamdani family is receiving heightened public attention following Zohran Mamdani’s recent election as New York City’s first Muslim mayor-elect. Rama Duwaji, despite her large following, has largely maintained a low profile during Mamdani’s campaign.

Who Is Rama Duwaji?

An artist by profession, Rama Duwaji was born in Houston to Syrian parents and grew up between the United States and the Gulf. She studied design at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Arts in Qatar before transferring to the university’s Richmond campus. She later earned a master’s degree in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Rama Duwaji works as an illustrator and ceramicist, with her art appearing in major publications including The New Yorker, The Washington Post, BBC, Vogue and Tate Modern. Her illustrations often center on themes related to Middle Eastern women, blending personal heritage with contemporary artistic expression.
