West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Babul Supriyo and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay entered into a verbal spat over alleged car honking on Kolkata’s Vidyasagar Bridge on Friday.
The TMC MLA alleged that his car was stopped and he was also abused, while Gangopadhyay claimed that it was the Bengal minister who had used foul language against him.
“Babul Supriyo stopped my vehicle and used foul language," Gangopadhyay said, claiming that the minister was apparently protesting the blowing of horn, which he said occurred behind another car and not that of Supriyo’s car.
Gangopadhyay, a former judge of the Calcutta High Court, said that Supriyo had stepped out of his car and used foul language against him.
Videos of the incident showed a huge crowd near Gangopadhyay’s vehicle as the dramatic episode played out on the bridge.

Supriyo, the West Bengal Information Technology and Electronics minister, confronted the MP and said, “I have not written MLA in my car, but you have written MP in your car and disturbing people."
“But he (Gangopadhyay) used foul language against me as I approached him," the singer-turned-politician said.
Both the leaders continued their argument on the Hubli bridge and almost came to blows. The situation drew the attention of bystanders and was later brought under control by police officials who were on duty nearby.
Supriyo, who was a minister of state in the Narendra Modi government earlier, had left the BJP to join the Trinamool Congress in September 2021.
In October 2024, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee and BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay were involved in an ugly spat during a meeting of the parliamentary committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.
