Over 110,000 people are on roads against immigration; they marched through the United Kingdom’s capital, London. This is one of the biggest right-wing demonstrations, spearheaded by Tommy Robinson.

Robinson, an anti-immigration activist, organised the ‘Unite the Kingdom’ rally on Saturday. The protesters, carrying flags of England and Britain, clashed with police, leaving at least 26 officers injured.

Who Is Tommy Robinson?

41-year-old Tommy Robinson’s real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. He founded the nationalist and anti-Islam English Defence League and is one of the most influential far-right figures in Britain.

He was released from prison earlier this year, having been jailed for being in contempt of court by repeating false accusations about a Syrian refugee.

Robinson had been jailed multiple times. He planned a ‘Unite the Kingdom’ rally last year but could not attend because he was jailed for contempt of court for violating a 2021 High Court order barring him from repeating libellous allegations against a Syrian refugee who successfully sued him. He previously served jail time for assault and mortgage fraud.

Protests In London

London’s Metropolitan Police said the “Unite the Kingdom" march, organised by anti-immigrant activist Tommy Robinson, was attended by around 110,000 people, who were kept apart from a “Stand Up to Racism" counter-protest attended by around 5,000.

As per the officials, 26 officers were injured and as of now 25 protestors have been arrested. “We are identifying those who were involved in the disorder and they can expect to face robust police action in the coming days and weeks," Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist told Reuters.

Several anti-migrant protests were held this summer outside hotels housing asylum-seekers after the arrest of an Ethiopian man who was later convicted of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in a London suburb.

Participants in the “Unite the Kingdom" rally carried the St. George’s red-and-white flag of England and the union jack, the state flag of the United Kingdom, and chanted “we want our country back."
