Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s photo of exiting the parliament with his chair and his tongue sticking out has gone viral on social media.

The gesture garnered reactions from social media but it is a convention in Canada that lawmakers can take their chair, their seat with them when they leave the Canadian parliament.

“When any MP leaves the Commons, they are allowed to take their chair, their seat with them. I find it a great tradition, one that I support. That said, this is a weird photo of Trudeau leaving with his. Also, perhaps another sign of a looming election," columnist Brian Lilley of the Toronto Sun said.

Canada must hold elections by October but could see a snap poll within weeks. Current public opinion surveys put the opposition Conservatives as slight favorites.

Justin Trudeau, facing dismal opinion poll numbers, in early January announced his plans to resign, concluding Liberal in-fighting had left him unable to lead the party into another election.

More than nine years after he initially wooed voters with a progressive agenda, Trudeau left office, with his Liberal Party selecting Mark Carney as the next leader. Carney is now the Prime Minister and is expected to go head-to-head against Pierre Poilievre of the Conservatives.

“I am damn proud of what we’ve done over these past 10 years for the middle class and the people working hard to join it," Trudeau told supporters in a speech to supporters at the party leadership conference.

The two months since Trudeau announced his resignation have been the most turbulent in recent Canadian history.

US President Donald Trump has continued to muse about making Canada the 51st US state and launched a trade war Trudeau says is aimed at collapsing the Canadian economy to make annexation “easier."

The former prime minister, demeaned repeatedly by Trump as “Governor Trudeau," has partly repaired his standing among voters who before Christmas seemed desperate for him to go.

He has won praise for a series of resolute speeches in response to Trump’s various tariff actions, including this week, when he warned Canadians that trade chaos with the United States would cause economic pain.

“When it comes to defending our great nation, there is no price we all aren’t willing to pay," he said.
