Donald Trump shared personal stories in a "Salute to America" speech in Des Moines, discussing his relationship with Melania.

US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump, speaking in Des Moines just hours after Congress passed his sweeping tax and spending bill, offered an unexpected glimpse into his personal life during a “Salute to America" address marking the eve of the country’s 249th Independence Day. While addressing supporters, Donald Trump pivoted from discussing military recruitment to recounting a personal exchange with his wife Melania Trump.
“I remember saying to our great First Lady…" he began, before pausing and adding, “I call her ‘First Lady,’ isn’t it terrible?"
He continued, “I’m saying ‘Good night, First Lady, my darling,’ because it reminds me that I’m president, that’s why. I said ‘First Lady, it’s terrible nobody wants to join our military force’."
During the address, Donald Trump sharply criticized Democrats opposing his legislative package, mocked Iran and renewed his attacks on New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.
“Very simply, the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ will deliver the strongest border on Earth, the strongest economy on Earth, the strongest military on Earth and ensure the United States of America will remain the strongest country anywhere on this beautiful planet," he said.
Donald Trump also said he’s working on legislation to create potential pathways for farmworkers without legal status. He said, “If a farmer is willing to vouch for these people, in some way, I think we’re just going to have to say that’s going to be good, right? You know, we’re going to be good with it. Because we don’t want to do it where we take all of the workers off the farms. We want the farms to do great like they’re doing right now.“
Melania Trump Praises Taylor Swift
Melania Trump, who has kept a limited public profile in recent months, made an appearance earlier at Children’s Hospital in Washington. According to The Daily Beast, she told patients, “It’s a very special day. So we will have a big party at the White House… When you feel better, maybe next year, you come over and we’ll celebrate together." She also engaged with the children about Taylor Swift despite Donald Trump stating last year that he “hated" the singer.
