US President Donald Trump on Friday named Katie Zacharia, a communications adviser to his social media platform Truth Social, as the next White House press secretary, filling a position left vacant by Karoline Leavitt’s departure in August.

Announcing the appointment on Truth Social, Trump praised Zacharia’s loyalty and experience, expressing confidence that she would take on the role effectively.

He said Zacharia had an "unblemished record of support, and has been a loyal and brilliant supporter."

"I am confident that Katie will deliver strong results for our Country as the next White House Press Secretary, as she has the respect of, and will work fantastically with, the Media, the American People, and my Administration," Trump wrote.

KEY ROLE AHEAD OF US MIDTERM ELECTIONS

Zacharia’s appointment puts her at the centre of the White House’s communications operation as the country approaches next month’s midterm elections. The vote will determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress and provide a test of public support for Trump’s agenda.

In a social media post, Zacharia welcomed the appointment and said she looked forward to "working with the White House press corps, and with reporters across the country" to communicate Trump’s message.

The appointment comes as Trump faces declining approval ratings. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found his approval rating had fallen to 32%, the lowest of his political career, as fellow Republicans grew dissatisfied with his handling of the cost of living and the Iran war.

CLOSE LINKS TO TRUMP'S POLITICAL AND MEDIA NETWORK

Zacharia’s selection highlights the close connections between Trump’s administration and his wider political and media operation.

In July, Trump Media announced that it would offer banks and trading firms paid access to posts from influential Truth Social accounts, including the president’s, describing the service as providing "the fastest" access to such posts. Trump’s social media statements have frequently moved global markets.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Zacharia has worked as a senior communications adviser for Truth Social and its parent company, Trump Media & Technology Group, since June.

She briefly served as a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security before leaving the department in March.

ATTORNEY WITH CONSERVATIVE MEDIA EXPERIENCE

An attorney, Zacharia frequently appears on conservative television networks Fox News and Newsmax. She previously worked as a legal adviser to Fix California, a conservative group that says it seeks to counter what it describes as "the left's stranglehold" on state politics.

The group was founded by Richard Grenell, who has served as Trump’s envoy to Venezuela and as interim president and executive director of the Kennedy Center in Washington.

Zacharia also interned at the White House during the administration of former President George W. Bush.
