US President Donald Trump issued a sharp rebuttal to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying Canada’s security and survival have long depended on the United States.

“Canada lives because of the US," Donald Trump said, responding to Mark Carney’s remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the Canadian leader warned that the US-led rules-based international order was enduring a “rupture."

“Mark Carney should remember that next time he makes those statements," Donald Trump added.

Donald Trump’s comments come amid growing friction between Washington and Ottawa after Mark Carney delivered a high-profile speech arguing that the old global order anchored by US leadership was fading and that middle powers like Canada could no longer rely on compliance or appeasement for security.

Donald Trump, who has previously referred to Canada as a potential “51st state," has repeatedly argued that the US provides the backbone of North American defence, including through NATO and continental security arrangements.
