US President Donald Trump issued a firm ultimatum to America’s trading partners as he asserted that all tariff payments must begin on August 1, 2025- with no extensions. The warning by Donald Trump, shared on his Truth Social account, follows a new round of tariff threats aimed at 14 countries, marking a dramatic escalation in his administration’s global trade war.

“TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025," Donald Trump wrote in all caps, adding, “There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change. No extensions will be granted."

The announcement comes after Donald Trump unveiled the first wave of formal letters to countries- with Laos and Myanmar facing 40 per cent tariffs, the highest under the new policy.

Earlier, Donald Trump said that he remains open to adjustments for countries showing goodwill as he said, referring to the possibility of tweaking rates for nations offering further concessions, “Maybe adjust a little bit, depending… We’re not going to be unfair."

Targeted Countries And Rates

The list of targeted nations includes several key Asian and African trading partners. Laos and Myanmar are set to face 40% tariffs. Thailand and Cambodia will be hit with 36% tariffs. Bangladesh and Serbia are assigned 35%. Indonesia will face 32%. South Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina will be subject to 30%. Malaysia, Tunisia, Japan, South Korea and Kazakhstan will each face a 25% tariff.

Reciprocity Threats By Donald Trump

Donald Trump warned of automatic retaliation against any nation that raises tariffs in response. In letters to Japan and South Korea, he threatened that any reciprocal hikes would be added on top of the new US tariff rates rather than offsetting them.

“Whatever the number you choose to raise them by will be added onto the 25 per cent that we charge," he said.
