Just hours after being sworn in as the new US Ambassador to India by President Donald Trump at the White House, Sergio Gor pledged to strengthen strategic and economic ties between Washington and New Delhi, calling the relationship "vitally important".

Speaking in his first on-camera interview since his appointment, Ambassador Gor told India Today at a reception held in his honour at the Kennedy Center that both President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi share a "remarkable chemistry" and a "strong personal bond" that will guide the next phase of bilateral engagement.

In his first exclusive interview following the swearing-in, Gor emphasised the relationship between India and the US. "It’s vitally important that the United States and India have a very close relationship," Gor told India Today. "Our President and your Prime Minister have incredible chemistry and history. If I can do my little part to enhance and grow that relationship—strategically, economically—we have so many things in common," he added.

Reflecting on his recent visit to India, Gor said he was deeply impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warmth and hospitality.

"There’s a reason they call it Incredible India," he said. "Meeting Prime Minister Modi, last month was amazing, and I’m very much looking forward to returning in January."

He emphasised that the Trump administration intends to devote greater attention to South and Central Asia, a region he said was "neglected by previous administrations".

"India will be my home but I’ll also be engaging with neighbours like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, which are vitally important not just to us, but to the world," Gor said.

On trade, Ambassador Gor struck an optimistic note about progress toward a new US–India deal.

"We’re making good progress," he said. "We’re going in the right direction, and we want to take this relationship to the next level."

Before signing off, Gor shared a personal reflection on what he loves most about India: "It’s the food, the culture, the history — but above all, it’s the hospitality. The way people welcomed me was incredible, and I can’t wait to come back."

The evening’s reception was attended by senior members of the Trump Cabinet, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and several senior advisers.
