US President Donald Trump said he is taking a larger daily dose of aspirin than his doctors recommend, citing concerns about his heart and blood circulation.
“They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don’t want thick blood pouring through my heart," Donald Trump told Wall Street Journal, adding, “I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart. Does that make sense?"
Donald Trump, 79, is the second-oldest person to serve as US president, after his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, who left office at the age of 82 after dropping his 2024 re-election bid amid questions about his fitness.
Donald Trump’s physician Sean Barbabella told the Journal that the US President takes 325 milligrams of aspirin daily as a preventive measure for cardiac health. By comparison, the Mayo Clinic says a low-dose aspirin regimen- most commonly 81 milligrams- is typically recommended for older adults when advised by a doctor.
Daily aspirin use can help lower the risk of heart attack or stroke in people over 60, though medical experts caution that higher doses may increase the risk of bleeding and should be taken only under medical supervision.
Donald Trump’s health has been under renewed attention in recent months following visible bruising on his hands, reports of brain imaging and instances where he appeared to close his eyes during public events.
The White House said earlier that the bruising was the result of Donald Trump shaking large numbers of hands and described the imaging as preventive. While earlier reports suggested Donald Trump had undergone an MRI in October, both he and Sean Barbabella told the Journal that the US President actually received a CT scan.
Sean Barbabella said doctors had initially considered either an MRI or a CT scan but opted for the latter “to definitively rule out any cardiovascular issues." The scan revealed no abnormalities, according to the physician.
