Late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel is seen.
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel launched a fresh attack on US President Donald Trump during a Christmas Day address in Britain, declaring that “tyranny is booming" in the United States and accusing the American government of attempting to silence him.
Jimmy Kimmel delivered the remarks as part of Channel 4’s Alternative Christmas Message, a long-running annual broadcast designed as a provocative counterpoint to the traditional royal address. Jimmy Kimmel told British viewers that “from a fascism perspective, this has been a really great year," while mocking Donald Trump as “King Donny VIII." He suggested that democratic backsliding can happen quickly and warned that government pressure on critics is no longer confined to authoritarian states.
“You may have read in your colorful newspapers my country’s president would like to shut me up because I don’t adore him in the way he likes to be adored," Jimmy Kimmel said during the broadcast, adding, “The American government made a threat against me and the company I work for, and all of a sudden, we were off the air."
Jimmy Kimmel framed his subsequent return to television as a personal and political victory, telling viewers, “We won, the president lost." He added that he was now back on air “every night giving the most powerful politician on earth a right and richly deserved bollocking."
The comments marked an escalation in Jimmy Kimmel’s long-running feud with Donald Trump and followed a turbulent period for his show earlier this year. In September, ABC, owned by The Walt Disney Company, briefly suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! after backlash over remarks he made following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
ABC initially described the show as being taken off air “indefinitely" but the suspension lasted about a week before the network reversed course amid public backlash. In December, Disney extended Jimmy Kimmel’s contract through 2027.
Referencing that episode in his Christmas message, Jimmy Kimmel called his return a “September miracle," claiming widespread public support.
“Millions and millions of people stood up and said: ‘No, this is not acceptable,’" he said.
Closing his address, Jimmy Kimmel apologised to British viewers for exporting American political turmoil.
“We’re not all like him," he said of Donald Trump, adding, “We’re going through a bit of a wobble right now, but we’ll come around."
