Amid rising tensions in Minnesota following the fatal shooting of an ICU nurse by federal immigration agents, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the incident was “very sad" but added that “you can’t walk in with guns".
Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents over the weekend. The incident marked the second fatal shooting involving federal officers in the state in less than a month, following the death of mother-of-three Renée Good.
On Tuesday, Trump told reporters at the White House: “I’m looking at that whole situation. I love everybody. I love all of our people. I love his family — and it’s a very sad situation. We’re doing a big investigation. I want to see the investigation. I’m going to be watching over it. I want a very honorable and honest investigation — I have to see it myself."
On being asked about the “a would-be assassin" description, which was used on Saturday by deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, CNN quoted the President said “No…not as an — no."
“With that being said, you can’t have guns. You can’t walk in with guns. You just can’t. You can’t walk in with guns, you can’t do that. But it’s a very unfortunate incident," he said.
The remarks came as protests spread across Minneapolis, which has emerged as a focal point of President Donald Trump’s stepped-up immigration enforcement drive. Thousands of federal agents from ICE and Customs and Border Protection have been deployed in the city, drawing criticism from local leaders and civil rights groups.
Speaking on backlash on Department of Homeland and its secretary Kristi Noem over their response to the shooting of another US citizen at the hands of federal agent, Trump said: “I think she’s doing a very good job… the border is totally secure. You forget, we had a border that I inherited where millions of people were coming through. Now, we have a border where no one is coming through."
He also attacked Democrats for allowing “murderers and drug lords and people from mental institutions" being “dumped into our country through open borders of the Democrats".
Minneapolis has become the latest epicenter of Trump’s immigration crackdown — a top domestic priority this term — with the Department of Homeland Security’s federal agents carrying out patrols and raids.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has accused the Trump administration of sending untrained federal agents into the state, warning that the expanded presence risks further violence. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski also said the killings should raise serious questions about the adequacy of immigration enforcement training and operational guidelines.
CNN quoted Trump saying border czar Tom Homan, whom the President sent to Minneapolis, is set to meet with Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.
“He’s meeting with the governor, and he’s meeting with the mayor, I think later, and I hear that’s all going very well," Trump said.
