New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani told a podcaster that a coffee table book was one of weirdest things he saw when he met US President Donald Trump in the White House.
Mamdani in a conversation with Adam Friedland during an appearance on “The Adam Friedland Show" reflect on his visit to the White House. The video of the interaction was released on social media on Tuesday.
“What was the weirdest thing he showed you?" host Adam Friedland asked. “He had to have shown you something – one thing weird," Friedland, a comedian, pushed.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old political insurgent who rocketed from obscurity to win City Hall earlier this month, had taken on Trump in a bruising war of words, likening the Republican to “bad landlords… taking advantage of their tenants."
Washington watchers were bracing for sparks to fly when the self-described Democratic socialist met the Republican leader who has in turn branded the mayor-elect a “communist" and suggested the Ugandan-born New Yorker should be deported.
But the Oval Office summit was instead the embodiment of civility as a beaming Trump, 79, praised Mamdani’s historic election win, said he could do a “great job," and called him a “man who really wants to see New York be great again."
“We’re going to be helping him to make everybody’s dream come true: having a strong and very safe New York," Trump had said.
Mamdani recalled that the most peculiar thing he saw was the coffee-table book. “In front of me are like, all these different coffee table books, and one of them is UFC at the White House," Mamdani said.
He said he “was flipping through" the book while waiting for his meeting with the US President. He said he looking at visualizations of what the octagon ring will look like on the south lawn of the White House.
