UK Condemns Brutal Mob Killings, Urges Protection of Hindus in Bangladesh
The United Kingdom has come out in support of the Hindu community in Bangladesh amid ongoing unrest and violence against minorities in the country. For the first time, the government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned the recent killings of two Hindus by mobs.
Whitehall sources told TOI that the UK government “condemns the murders of Dipu Chandra Das and Amrit Mondal" and has extended condolences to their families and friends.
Dipu Chandra Das, 27, was a Hindu garment factory worker from Bangladesh. On December 18, he was handed over to an angry mob in Mymensingh over allegations of blasphemy, which were later described as fake. The mob lynched him, tied his body to a tree and set it on fire. The extreme violence took place during unrest following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi.
As per reports, the UK government welcomed the 12 arrests made in connection with Das’s killing. They also said the UK welcomed public assurances from Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, on the safety of minority communities.
Another Hindu man, Amrit Mondal, 29, was beaten to death by villagers in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district on December 24. The Bangladeshi government has claimed that Mondal was a criminal who had gone to the area to extort money.
Westminster sources told TOI that the UK remains committed to defending freedom of religion or belief. They added that the issue of protecting minorities had been raised with Bangladesh, including during a visit by international development minister Jenny Chapman in November, when she met Yunus.
The sources also said the UK had stressed the importance of a peaceful election campaign in Bangladesh. They added that Britain continues to support Bangladesh in protecting civic and human rights and tackling corruption.
Meanwhile, Tom Morrison, a Liberal Democrat MP, has written to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, calling for urgent UK government engagement over Das’s murder. British MP Apsana Begum also said there must be full accountability and that protections for religious minorities must be upheld against mob violence.
