UK police have arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of racially motivated rape of a Sikh woman in Oldbury, England. The attack took place last Tuesday, and the suspect was detained on Sunday.

The victim, a woman in her 20s, is receiving ongoing support as the investigation continues, West Midlands Police said.

Chief Superintendent Kim Madill of Sandwell Police called the arrest a “significant development" and thanked the community for their support.

“The investigation remains ongoing and we would urge people not to speculate as we work to identify and trace all those who may have been involved," she said.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the perpetrators allegedly told the woman, “You don’t belong in this country, get out," during the assault. The West Midlands Police have confirmed that two white male suspects are believed to have targeted the victim and made racist remarks during the attack.

The case has caused shock within the local Sikh community. On Sunday, hundreds gathered near the site of the assault for a solidarity march and prayers for the victim and her family.

Sikh Youth UK and the Sikh Federation UK have been providing support to the victim and her relatives. Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick held a public meeting last week to discuss community safety and vigilance.

In a statement, the gurdwara condemned all acts of violence motivated by identity, calling them “abhorrent" and appealing for collective action to help police investigations.

“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to serving this community with compassion, solidarity and courage," the statement said.

In a victim impact statement shared on Sikh Youth UK’s social media, the woman thanked the community for their support during this difficult time.

“We are going through a lot, but the strength and kindness shown by the right people in the community has been incredible and I can’t thank them enough for being my voice," she said.

She added, “I would never wish this on anyone. All I was doing was going about my day on my way to work, and what has happened has deeply affected us."
