In the wake of Iran’s missile attack on Israel, US officials have responded with strong condemnation, dubbing the attack “totally unacceptable.” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for the global denunciation of the attack, stating, it is “totally unacceptable” and added that the “entire world should condemn it.”
“Initial reports suggest that Israel, with the active support of the United States and other partners, effectively defeated this attack,” he added. Blinken made these remarks during a press briefing at the State Department.
Security Adviser Jake Sullivan termed the missile barrage as a “significant escalation by Iran.” He noted that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) managed the situation effectively, resulting in no casualties. Sullivan said, “This is a significant event, and it is equally significant that we were able to step up with Israel and create a situation in which no one was killed in this attack in Israel.”
He reiterated that the US would hold Iran accountable for its actions, stating, “We have made clear that there will be consequences, severe consequences, for this attack, and we will work with Israel to make that the case.” The Biden administration is currently monitoring developments and consulting with Israeli officials regarding potential responses to the attack.
Earlier in the day, the IDF reported that Iran had launched over 100 missiles targeting various regions across Israel, prompting widespread Red Alerts. Civilians in central and southern Israel were urged to seek shelter, with over 10 million people potentially affected by the missile barrage.
The attack follows a warning from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who stated that the missile strikes were a response to what he termed the “aggression of the Zionist regime.” “Let Benjamin Netanyahu know that Iran is not a belligerent, but it stands firmly against any threat. This is only a corner of our power,” Pezeshkian warned.
