The US ramped up pressure on Venezuela as it flew Air Force B-1 bombers near the South American nation which it considers its adversary.
The Wall Street Journal, who first reported the development, said that two B-1 Lancers took off from Dyess Air Force Base in Texas on Thursday and flew near Venezuela. The planes, capable of flying at supersonic speeds and carrying over 34,000 kilos of bombs, remained in international airspace.
US President Donald Trump called the report by the newspaper ‘inaccurate’. He added that the United States is “not happy with Venezuela for a lot of reasons".
His Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro, who accuses Washington of trying to engineer a regime change, launched a plea in English as tensions mounted: “No crazy war, please!"
“Yes peace, yes peace forever, peace forever. No crazy war, please!" Maduro said in a meeting with unions aligned with the leftist leader, a former bus driver and union leader.
The latest move came days after other American warplanes carried out an “attack demonstration" near Venezuela.
The US aircraft were not moved to bases in the region. These aircraft can reach anywhere in the Caribbean.
US Air Force officials said that the bombers could be used to hit narcotics distribution or production facilities days after Donald Trump said that US could hit land targets. “There are few boats traveling on the water, so now they’ll come in by land to a lesser extent, and they will be hit on land also," Trump said Wednesday at the White House. He also said he had authorized covert action against Caracas.
The United States has deployed stealth warplanes and Navy ships as part of what it calls counter-narcotics efforts, but has yet to release evidence that its targets — eight boats and a semi-submersible — were smuggling drugs.
The US strikes, which began on September 2, have killed at least 37 people, according to US figures.
Meanwhile, the Trinidad and Tobago Foreign Ministry said a US warship will visit Trinidad and Tobago for joint exercises near the coast of Venezuela. The USS Gravely will dock in Port of Spain from October 26-30, and a contingent of US Marines will conduct joint training with the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force, it said.
