The US military’s official death toll from the Iran war has risen to 14 after a Navy pilot died in a helicopter crash in the Arabian Sea earlier this month. The number of wounded service members has also gone up to 414 as of Monday, with US Central Command saying most of the injuries were traumatic brain injuries.

The latest death is the first recorded since 13 service members were killed in separate incidents in March at the start of the war. Even as Iran and the US have resumed strikes, officials have not said whether renewed fighting was linked to the latest injury added to the casualty count.

The Navy had initially described the July 1 helicopter incident as an emergency landing and said there was “no indication the emergency was caused by hostile action”. The other three sailors on board were rescued soon after the crash. The Pentagon’s updated casualty count for July added one non-hostile death.

Of the 13 deaths recorded earlier, six soldiers were killed in an Iranian drone strike on a command centre in Kuwait. Another soldier died more than a week after being wounded in an attack on the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Six more service members were killed when a KC-135 refuelling aircraft supporting US military operations against Iran crashed in Iraq.

US Central Command said on Monday that a total of 414 service members had been wounded, including a US Air Force member added that day. It did not give details about the airman, and it was unclear whether the injury was linked to the resumed strikes. Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for US Central Command, said the majority of those wounded had suffered traumatic brain injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries have emerged as one of the most common injuries in the war, especially among troops exposed to nearby missile strikes and explosions. Along with post-traumatic stress disorder, the injury has become one of the defining wounds among veterans of the post-9/11 period, though its long-term impact is still poorly understood. When asked on Monday for updated figures on seriously wounded troops, Maj. Emma Thompson, a US Central Command spokeswoman, said she had no update and repeated that “almost all” of those injured had returned to duty. She also did not say how many service members had been wounded badly enough to be evacuated from the region.

In sum, the US military has now recorded 14 deaths and 414 wounded personnel in the Iran war, with the latest fatality linked to a helicopter crash in the Arabian Sea and most injuries involving traumatic brain injuries.
