The United States has imposed temporary restrictions on its government personnel visiting high-end hotels in Karachi, Pakistan, following a reported threat targeting these establishments, the State Department announced on Friday.

According to a security alert issued by the US Consulate General in Karachi, officials received intelligence indicating a potential threat directed specifically at upscale hotels in the city. In response, the consulate has suspended official visits to these venues, citing precautionary measures to safeguard personnel.

The State Department emphasised that such restrictions are not uncommon and may extend to other public spaces abrod which include tourist attractions, shopping malls, restaurants, and markets when credible threats emerge. The advisory urges US government personnel in Pakistan to avoid crowded areas, maintain a low profile, and remain vigilant, especially in locations frequented by Western nationals.

RISK MITIGATION

Pakistan remains under a Level 3 travel advisory from the US government, which recommends that citizens reconsider their travel due to the ongoing risks of terrorism and the potential for armed conflict. Karachi, a sprawling metropolis and economic hub, has long grappled with security challenges, making it a focal point for diplomatic caution.

US had previously advised its citizens to reconsider their travel plans to Pakistan in September last year owing to growing concerns about terrorism.

The alert underscores the volatile security landscape in parts of Pakistan, which is just a level above the level 4 category, which is "do not travel", applied to areas like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and areas near the line of control.
