Amid flying missiles between Israel and Iran, US aircraft carrier USS Nimitz has been moved from the South China Sea on Monday morning towards the west, news agency Reuters reported, citing data from the ship tracking website Marine Traffic.
The movement was noticed after a reception for its planned port call in central Vietnam was called off.
The ship was supposed to visit Danang City later this week, but two sources — including a diplomat — told Reuters that the official welcome event planned for June 20 has been canceled.
One of the sources said that the US Embassy in Hanoi had informed him about the cancellation due to “an emergent operational requirement."
The Nimitz Carrier Strike Group carried out maritime security operations in the South China Sea last week as part of the US Navy’s regular activities in the Indo-Pacific region, according to the US Pacific Fleet’s website.
Marine Traffic data showed that on Monday morning, the carrier was heading west toward the Middle East, where tensions between Israel and Iran are growing.
