An American official on Wednesday claimed that Ukraine has agreed to a deal to end the war with Russia by agreeing to the US-backed peace deal, put forward by US President Donald Trump.

The 28-point peace plan, which has now been tightened to 19, still has some “minor details" outstanding, the official said. Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had said that more work needed to be done before finalising any deal.

The development, first reported by US broadcaster CNN, comes as US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll meets with Russian officials to discuss Trump administration’s proposal in Abu Dhabi.

Lt Col Jeff Tolbert, spokesperson for Driscoll, said the Abu Dhabi talks between the US and Russian delegations “are going well" and that they “remain optimistic."

“The Ukrainians have agreed to the peace deal. There are some minor details to be sorted out but they have agreed to a peace deal," the official was quoted as saying.

It should be noted that an Ukrainain delegation is also present in Abu Dhabi and are in contact with Army Secretary Driscoll.

Ukraine’s national security secretary, Rustem Umerov, said that the delegations had “reached a common understanding on the core terms of the agreement discussed in Geneva" in a post on X.

“We now count on the support of our European partners in our further steps," Umerov wrote. He highlighted that Ukraine looked forward to organizing a visit of Zelenskyy to the US to “complete final steps and make a deal with President (Donald) Trump".

Zelenskyy took to X earlier this morning where he said much work is left to do with regard to the peace deal. “Following the meetings in Geneva, we see many prospects that can make the path to peace real. There are solid results, and much work still lies ahead," he said.
