Amid a row over US intel chief Tulsi Gabbard's remarks on violence against minorities in Bangladesh, the White House said on Wednesday that America has welcomed measures taken by the interim government of the Asian nation to "ensure safety and security for all".
Speaking at a media briefing, spokesperson for the US Department of State Tammy Bruce said that America condemns any instances of violence or intolerance towards minorities in any country.
"We condemn any instances of violence or intolerance directed towards members of minority communities in any country and have welcomed measures taken by Bangladesh's interim government to ensure safety and security for all in Bangladesh. That's what we're watching. That's what we expect. And, that will be what continues," she added.
There has been a storm over the recent remarks by Gabbard to an Indian TV channel wherein she claimed that the violence against minorities in Bangladesh and the threat of Islamic terrorists in the Asian nation was rooted in the "ideology and objective to rule and govern with an Islamist Caliphate".
"The talks are just beginning between President Trump's new cabinet coming in and the Government of Bangladesh, but this continues to remain a central focus area of concern," she told the channel.
The statement drew severe criticism from the Muhammad Yunus-headed Bangladesh government, which called it "misleading and damaging" to the reputation of the country.
