US Stock Market Highlights: The S&P 500 ended Tuesday’s (July 8) session nearly unchanged, weighed down by continued uncertainty over President Donald Trump’s tariff plans. The benchmark index slipped 0.07%, while the Nasdaq Composite inched up 0.03%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 165.6 points, or 0.37%. Markets struggled to find direction amid conflicting signals from the White House. On Monday, Trump extended the deadline for new tariffs to August 1 from July 9, but later suggested the date was “not 100% firm.” By Tuesday, he reversed course again, stating on Truth Social that there would be no changes or further extensions to the August 1 deadline. Adding to the uncertainty, Trump also announced a 50% tariff on copper imports, which sent copper futures sharply higher and added another layer of volatility for traders already trying to navigate his sector-specific tariff agenda.
