Donald Trump, during the dinner, attacked Democrate Tim Walz over his well-known image of protecting transgender rights

Former US President Donald Trump Thursday again grabbed headlines as he mocked his political rival and Kamala Harris’ pick for Vice-President, Tim Walz, at the Al Smith Dinner, which has been an election-year tradition. Trump, during the dinner, attacked Walz over his well-known image of protecting transgender rights.

In another put-down to transgender people, Trump, the Republican face for the upcoming US polls, while standing at the lectern said, “I used to think that Democrats were crazy for saying that men have periods. But then I met Tim Walz.”

Walz is known as one of the most prominent champions in protecting the rights of transgender people in his state, Minnesota.

In fact, the Minnesota Governor, who was recently named as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, has a legislative history of supporting the rights of transgender minors and gender-affirming care, which has come under fire from top Republicans, including former President Donald Trump and his running mate Ohio Senator JD Vance.

Walz’s Record On Gender-affirming Care

In April 2023, Walz, who has been the state’s governor since 2019, signed a Minnesota law aimed at protecting the rights of the LGBTQ+ community to access and receive gender-affirming health care — which can include a range of medical procedures and care such as surgery and puberty blockers—without intervention of out-of-state laws.

The law states court orders “for the removal of a child issued in another state solely because the child’s parent or guardian assisted the child in receiving gender-affirming care in this state must not be enforced in this state,” with many referring to this as a “Trans Refuge” law. It prohibits the extradition of out-of-state individuals for receiving legal case in Minnesota.
