Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on Monday said she plans to return to her country “as soon as possible" and launched a scathing attack on interim president Delcy Rodríguez, following the removal of Nicolás Maduro from power by US forces. Speaking in her first public remarks since the dramatic developments over the weekend, Machado said she was determined to go back despite the uncertain situation.
“I’m planning to go back to Venezuela as soon as possible," Machado told Fox News host Sean Hannity, speaking from an undisclosed location. She openly rejected Rodríguez’s leadership, alleging that the interim president “is one of the main architects of torture, persecution, corruption, narcotrafficking." Rodríguez, who previously served as vice president under Maduro, has indicated willingness to cooperate with Washington.
Machado claimed Rodríguez lacks public support, saying she is “rejected" by Venezuelans and that the opposition enjoys overwhelming backing. “In free and fair elections, we will win by over 90 percent of the votes, I have no doubt about it," she said.
Outlining her vision for the country, Machado vowed to “turn Venezuela into the energy hub of the Americas" and “dismantle all these criminal structures" that she said have devastated the nation. She also pledged to “bring millions of Venezuelans that have been forced to flee our country back home," as she positioned herself as a central figure in Venezuela’s political transition.
