US President Donald Trump said he was “very angry" after Russian President Vladimir Putin told him that Ukraine had allegedly attempted to attack one of his residences.
What Trump said?
Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump said Putin informed him early in the morning about the alleged attack. Trump said he was angry after hearing the claim and described it as unacceptable. However, he also admitted that it was possible the incident had not taken place.
“You’re saying maybe the attack didn’t take place? That’s possible too, I guess. But President Putin told me this morning it did. I was very angry about it," Trump said. He added that attacking a leader’s residence was wrong and said it was “not the right time" for such actions.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov alleged that Ukraine attempted to strike Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region, west of Moscow, using long-range drones on December 28 and 29.
According to Lavrov, 91 drones were launched but all were intercepted by Russian air defence systems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed the claim, calling it “another round of lies from the Russian Federation". Kyiv said there was no truth to Russia’s accusation.
What Russia said?
Russia on Monday claimed that US President Donald Trump was “shocked and outraged" after Russian President Vladimir Putin told him that Ukraine had tried to attack one of his residences.
However, Ukraine has strongly denied the allegation, calling it a lie.
Russia also claimed that Trump reacted strongly during his conversation with Putin and was stunned by the alleged incident.
According to Russian officials, Trump said Ukraine would not have carried out such an action if it had been given more advanced weapons, adding, “Thank God we didn’t give them Tomahawks."
Meanwhile, Trump spoke to Putin twice within 24 hours, a day after meeting Zelenskyy in Florida. Despite the controversy, Trump said his conversation with Putin was productive and that both sides discussed several difficult issues.
“It was a very productive talk," Trump said, adding that progress was possible if key challenges were resolved. He said peace could be achieved if those issues were addressed.
The alleged drone attack, if confirmed, would mark a further rise in tensions between Russia and Ukraine at a time when diplomatic efforts remain fragile.
Ukraine peace talk
On Sunday, Trump said talks with Zelenskyy were bringing them “very close" to an agreement to end the war, though serious disagreements remained.
Meanwhile, Putin struck a firm tone, urging his army to continue efforts to take full control of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region. The Kremlin also repeated its demand that Ukrainian forces withdraw from remaining parts of eastern Ukraine under Kyiv’s control.
