Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan may soon become Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ neighbours in Miami, Florida. Zuckerberg is in talks to buy a luxury home at Indian Creek Village, also dubbed as ‘billionaire bunker’, one of the richest neighbourhoods in the US.
Extreme privacy, security and exclusivity, here’s why “billionaire bunker" is attractive to the ultra-rich.
What is Billionaire Bunker?
The ‘Billionaire Bunker’ is the nickname for Indian Creek Village, an ultra-exclusive, 300-acre man-made island located in Biscayne Bay, Florida.
Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index estimates Zuckerberg’s net worth at $240 billion.
What makes it attractive for the rich?
The island operates as an independent municipality with its own private police force that patrols by land, air, and water 24/7. It features an Israeli-designed radar system and cameras hidden throughout the landscape.
There are only 41 residential lots on the island, home to approximately 84 residents.
The interior of the island is dominated by a private 18-hole golf course and the Indian Creek Country Club, which reportedly has a $500,000 initiation fee.
Current residents include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, NFL legend Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, and billionaire investor Carl Icahn.
What are Zuckerberg’s plans?
Zuckerberg plans to purchase a waterfront mansion on the island for between $150 million and $200 million.
His nearly 2-acre estate is on the western side of the island, will position him just a few doors down from Jeff Bezos, who owns multiple lots in the same area.
The couple is expected to move into the nearly completed limestone mansion by April 2026.
The move coincides with a proposed 5% wealth tax in California, making Florida’s lack of state income tax financially attractive for tech titans. California has proposed a one-time 5 per cent tax on people with a net worth above $1 billion to fund healthcare, education, and food programs. However, Bloomberg noted that the union-backed measure has not yet gathered enough signatures to appear on the November ballot.
Fancy properties owned by Mark Zuckerberg
Palo Alto, California: Zuckerberg’s longtime home base is in Palo Alto, near Meta’s headquarters. Over many years he has purchased multiple adjoining properties in the Crescent Park neighbourhood, creating a multi-house private compound worth well over $100 million. Some of these were merged into a single large estate while others remain separate lots.
Lake Tahoe Retreat, California/Nevada: He owns two adjacent estates on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, called Carousel Estate and Brushwood Estate, bought for a combined roughly $59 million. These provide a luxurious lakefront getaway and form a secluded compound in a popular high-end vacation area.
Kauai, Hawaii: One of his most notable and expansive holdings is a massive ranch on the island of Kauai in Kauai. What began as a roughly 700-acre purchase has grown into more than 2,300 acres of land, including forested areas, beachfront and private ranch estate. It’s highly private and reportedly includes a substantial underground shelter.
Washington, D.C. Mansion: Zuckerberg and his wife reportedly bought a luxury residence in Washington, D.C., near embassies and key federal landmarks, likely to support more time spent there for Meta’s policy and government relations.
