Video: French MPs use 'rock, paper, scissors' to dodge far-right handshakes

A video from the parliamentary voting session on July 18 underscored the deep divisions within French politics.

The clip, posted on X, shows newly elected MP Flavien Termet from the right-wing Rally party standing beside a ballot box. As MPs file in to cast their votes, left-wing representatives deliberately avoid shaking hands with the 22-year-old Termet, ignoring his extended hand.

Notably, MP Francois Piquemal from La France Insoumise resorted to a rock-paper-scissors gesture to evade a handshake with Termet.

Traditionally, the oldest MP chairs the first session, with the youngest MP serving as secretary.
