Two nurses in China, protected newborns during a powerful earthquake
Terrifying CCTV footage has emerged showing two heroic nurses in China risking their lives to protect newborns during a powerful earthquake that rocked the China-Myanmar border. The 7.7-magnitude quake struck on March 28, shaking buildings violently and sending people fleeing in panic.
In a maternity centre in Ruili City, near the epicentre, nurse Xiong Jielan was caught on camera shielding a newborn in her arms while her colleague, Li Xiaoqing, worked to steady cots holding other infants.
“There was no time to react,” Xiong recalled. “I just wanted to protect my colleague and the babies. The shaking was too strong. The baby was scared, so I kept saying, ‘It’s okay, it’s okay,’ to comfort him.”
Despite the intense tremors, all staff, nurses, and newborns were safely evacuated from the facility. The swift response of the nurses prevented potential injuries, making them instant heroes.
The quake’s impact was devastating across Southeast Asia. While China reported no casualties, Myanmar suffered catastrophic losses, with state media confirming at least 1,700 deaths. Some estimates suggest the toll could rise above 2,000. In Thailand, 19 people lost their lives, and 76 remain missing after a building collapsed in Bangkok.
Rescue operations are underway in affected areas, with authorities assessing the full extent of the damage. Meanwhile, the footage of the Chinese nurses’ bravery has gone viral, drawing praise for their quick thinking under extreme pressure.
As Southeast Asia grapples with the destruction left by this powerful quake, one thing is clear—these nurses' selfless actions saved lives when every second counted.
