Meanwhile, leaders in the Swiss resort have united against Trump’s aggressive America First approach, with French President Emmanuel Macron pledging to resist “bullies” and the EU promising an “unflinching” response.
“I’m going to a beautiful place in Switzerland where I’m sure I’m very happily awaited for,” Trump said with a smile at a White House briefing marking his first year back in power, before departing for Davos. Asked how far he was prepared to go to acquire Greenland from Denmark, a fellow NATO member, Trump replied, “You’ll find out.”
Later, as he left the White House for his flight, the president admitted he had “no idea” how the trip to Davos would pan out. Trump’s speech at the annual gathering of the world’s economic and political elite, which he is attending for the first time in six years, is scheduled for 2.30 pm (7 pm IST). With tensions over Greenland threatening to create the largest rift between Washington and Europe in decades, Trump said he plans to hold a number of meetings on the topic while in Davos. According to Donald Trump, US forces established military bases on the island and prevented hostile powers from gaining access.
“They didn’t have a chance of getting on it and they tried. Denmark knows that,” he said, adding, “We literally set up bases on Greenland for Denmark. We fought for Denmark. We weren’t fighting for anyone else.”
Donald Trump described Greenland in characteristically vivid terms, calling it a “big, beautiful piece of ice,” and adding, “It’s hard to call it land. It’s a big piece of ice.”

Trump claimed that in one year he slashed the US’s monthly trade deficit by 77% with no inflation – something which he said everyone said couldn’t be done.
He said the US has steel plants being built all over the country and it has made historic trade deals with partners covering 40% of all US trade.
This included trade deals with countries in Europe, Japan and South Korea, especially on oil and gas.
He said that these deals have raised wealth and caused stock markets to boom, not only the US but in other countries that have entered these deals.
“When the US goes up, you follow,” he added.
