Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday responded to Congress MLA Nana Patole’s allegations of a “honeytrap" racket targeting state officials and ministers in Thane, Nashik and Mantralaya (secretariat) in Mumbai, saying that the police haven’t received any complaint regarding the matter.
While speaking during the monsoon session of the state assembly on Friday, Fadnavis said that no complaint has been lodged regarding honey trap and what Nana Patole has alleged hasn’t reached the government yet.
“Don’t know what bomb this is. We haven’t received it yet. No complaint of honey trap has been lodged yet neither by any minister nor any official," he said.
Nana Patole’s Allegations
The Chief Minister’s response came a day after former state Congress president Nana Patole triggered a fresh political storm by saying that top ministers and senior IAS and IPS officers may have been targeted in a honeytrap operation that has rocked the state in recent days.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Patole claimed that the actual number of officials caught up in the scandal is far higher than what is being reported. “The information we have received about this honeytrap incident is extremely serious. Due to such cases, confidential government documents can fall into the hands of anti-national elements, which would be a huge security lapse. This needs to be thoroughly investigated by the police," Patole said.
Speaking in the assembly, Patole claimed he had all the “proof" related to the allegations in a pen drive which is in his possession, and asserted that despite the issue being in public domain for some time, the government hasn’t made any statement so far.
Thane, Nashik and Mantralaya (state secretariat) have become centres of honeytrap, but the government hasn’t taken a note of it, he alleged.
The controversy gained momentum after media reports claimed that several senior officials in Maharashtra were blackmailed by a woman who allegedly trapped them by threatening fake rape cases and making extortion demands.
Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar asked the state government to take the matter seriously and submit a reply to the House. On Thursday, Patole again raised the issue, following which the Speaker directed the government to take action and report back before the end of the session on Friday.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde replied that the government as taken serious note of the allegations in this regard and strict action will be taken against the culprits after a probe.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home (Urban) Yogesh Kadam, talking to reporters in Vidhan Bhavan premises, said politicians claiming to possess evidence of blackmail should submit it to the state government instead of demanding clarifications in the legislature.
