Blue marks spotted on US President Donald Trump’s left hand recently triggered widespread speculation across US and international media, with much of the discussion centring on his age and health. The White House initially addressed the issue, and Trump later offered his own explanation while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his return from the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

Trump said the bruise appeared after his hand struck a table during events in Davos and attributed its visibility to his frequent intake of aspirin. That’s one of the side effects of taking aspirin," Trump said, adding that even a minor injury can quickly turn ino a noticeable bruise. Joking about the side effects, he remarked that while people are advised to take aspirin for heart health, those who want to avoid bruises should not.

“I would say take aspirin if you like your heart, but don’t take aspirin if you don’t want to have a little bruising," he said, acknowledging that doctors have advised him against it.

According to Trump, doctors have told him he is “very healthy" and does not need the medication, but he prefers not to take any chances. The White House Press Secretary, Carolyn Leavitt, also issued a statement saying the mark appeared after Trump’s hand hit the corner of a signing table during the announcement of the Board of Peace.

Medical experts cited by Reuters said the explanation is plausible. Four doctors told the news agency that excessive aspirin use can thin the blood, making bruises more visible even after minor impact and causing them to take longer to heal.

Earlier this month, Trump told The Wall Street Journal that he takes more aspirin than doctors recommend because he wants smooth blood flow to his heart, describing it as maintaining “good thin blood".

This is not the first time such marks have been noticed. Similar bruises appeared on Trump’s hand last year, when the White House attributed them to his frequent handshakes with the public.

At 79, Trump is the second-oldest president in US history. His predecessor, Joe Biden, left office at 82 and chose not to contest the 2024 presidential election amid concerns over age and health.
