As the United States prepares to celebrate Independence Day on Friday, July 4, many consumers are making last-minute purchases for their parties, and most major retail stores will remain open to serve them.

According to USA Today, banks, government offices, post offices, and the stock market will be closed. However, most big-box retailers and grocery chains will operate with regular or slightly adjusted holiday hours.

The Fourth of July marks the date in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was unanimously adopted by the Continental Congress, establishing the United States as an independent nation.
