The White House on Monday confirmed that senior Trump administration officials mistakenly added The Atlantic's editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, to an encrypted Signal chat discussing classified military operations against Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
The chat, titled "Houthi PC small group", reportedly included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Security Adviser Mike Waltz and others. The group exchanged details of imminent US strikes on Houthi targets — a disclosure now raising serious questions about the Trump administration's handling of sensitive national security communications.
According to Goldberg, Waltz instructed his deputy, Alex Wong, within the chat to establish a "tiger team" tasked with coordinating US military action.
According to an Atlantic story published on Monday titled "The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans", Goldberg was added to the open-source messaging app by someone posing as Michael Waltz, President Trump's national security adviser.
