Rekha Gupta, a grassroots Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader who rose through the ranks, has been chosen as Delhi’s newest Chief Minister. Delhi has had four females at the helm and Gupta follows Atishi, Sheila Dikshit and Sushma Swaraj.
Gupta, a lawyer by profession, is Arvind Kejriwal’s successor and was the president of the Delhi University’s Student Union, DUSU. According to sources, she is a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh member who made her foray into politics with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Over the years, Gupta steadily climbed the ranks, serving as a councillor, secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha’s (BJYM) Delhi unit, general secretary of the Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha, and a member of the BJP’s Executive. At 50, she now holds her first term as an MLA and as Delhi CM.
Sources said that the BJP top brass wants Gupta to hit the ground running and that the Centre wants ‘visible results’ to show on the streets of Delhi within the first 100 days.
Gupta could use her experience as South Delhi mayor in order to achieve the targets set for her. She thanked the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and said she is thankful that the party thought her to be a good fit for the role.
