A day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) faced a massive drubbing in the Bihar assembly polls, party president Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya on Saturday announced that she was “quitting politics" and severed ties with the family.

Acharya, a doctor who chose to become a homemaker and settled with her Singapore-based husband, made the announcement in a cryptic post on her X handle. “I am quitting politics and I am disowning my family…This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do…and I am taking all the blame," she wrote in her post.

Sanjay Yadav is the Rajya Sabha MP from RJD and one of the most trusted aides of Tejashwi Yadav, the son and heir apparent of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad. Rameez is said to be Tejashwi’s old friend who hails from a political family in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

The RJD’s seat tally slipped to 24 from 75 in the Bihar assembly polls. Acharya had unsuccessfully contested last year’s Lok Sabha polls from Saran. It was speculated that she was “unhappy" over the expulsion of Tej Pratap Yadav, elder son of Prasad, from the party. However, during the assembly elections, she was seen campaigning for Tejashwi.

Why not Yadav? Why the name Rohini and surname Acharya?

According to media reports, Rohini was born in 1979 in the Hindu calendar’s ‘Rohini Nakshatra’ under the care of a Patna-based gynaecologist, Dr Kamala Acharya. The doctor had refused to take any fees from Lalu Prasad. As Lalu insisted, Dr Acharya asked him if he can give her surname to his daughter. Hence came the name Rohini Acharya.

Rohini is settled in Singapore

After her marriage to Samresh Singh, a software engineer from Icchanbigha near Patna, in 2002, Acharya settled down in the US with her husband before shifting to Singapore, where they currently live with their two children.

There was a controversy over her wedding celebrations after it was alleged that their relatives forcibly took out brand new cars from Patna to the city airport to receive Samresh Singh, and his father and ex-income tax commissioner Rao Ranvijay Singh.

According to her election affidavit, she has assets worth Rs 36.6 crore.

Rohini donated her kidney to her father

Rohini donated one of her kidneys to her father in December 2022 at a Singapore hospital, as he suffered from chronic renal failure amid multiple health issues.

She said that her parents are like gods to her. “I’m destiny’s child and so proud to give my kidney to papa," Acharya had said on social media before the procedure.

After the transplant, she asked well-wishers to “take care of Papa," warning people to wear masks when meeting him because doctors advised limiting his exposure to infections. She described the donated kidney as “just a piece of flesh," underlining that her motive wasn’t political gain. Once the transplant was successful, she said: “After making my father healthy, I am sending him among all of you. Now you will all take care of my father."

As Bihar BJP’s Samrat Choudhary attacked Lalu, alleging that he “sold Saran ticket to Rohini in lieu of her kidney donation", Rohini defended herself and the RJD.

She highlighted her “selfless love" for her father, criticising people with “petty mentality" without mentioning Samrat’s name.

She said on X: “Giving my one kidney to my father is my duty and my love for him. Rohini is ready to sacrifice her life for her family and for land of her birth Bihar."

Lalu often mentions his daughter’s “great gesture" at various public platforms. Her brother Tejashwi Yadav had called her “superhuman" for the act of donation.

Trouble in family since September?

Acharya had unfollowed the party’s, Lalu’s as well as brother Tejashwi Yadav’s X handles in September over Sanjay Yadav’s alleged attack.

Acharya’s recent clash with Sanjay Yadav over kidney donation

Sanjay Yadav, sent to the Rajya Sabha in 2024, is believed to be an aide of Tejashwi, who also controls access to him.

Acharya recently had taken to social media (see post above) to slam the “people" spreading rumours, without naming Yadav.

“I openly challenge all those with a dirty mindset, and everyone encouraging such people, that if anyone can prove that I have ever asked for anything for myself or anyone else, and that my donating a kidney to my respected father is a lie, then I will withdraw from political and public life," Rohini Acharya wrote.

Acharya had also objected to Yadav taking the front seat at an event.

Tejashwi’s brother Tej Pratap had earlier branded him a “Jaichand" (betrayer), even as Acharya had supported Tej Pratap Yadav’s expulsion from the RJD.

Despite the miserable performance, Tejashwi managed to retain his Raghopur seat.

In a post on X, the RJD stated that public service is “an unceasing process, an endless journey," adding that setbacks and successes are both natural parts of political life. Emphasising that there is “no sorrow in defeat and no arrogance in victory," the RJD reaffirmed its commitment to representing the marginalised.

It stressed that, as a party of the poor, it will continue to raise their concerns and fight for their rights.
